Check out this entry for Your Story “written” by a 20 month old!
My name is Caitlyn and I am 20 Months old. I have been lactose intolerant for 3 months now since a bad case of gastroenteritis which put me in hospital. At first my mummy and Daddy didn’t know what ws a matter with me – I was just up evey night from midnight ‘till about 5am every morning with a very bad stomach ache – very bloated tummy and feeling really bad. I did have times like this before I had the gastroenteritis but not as much and not as bad.
It’s now a really bad intollerance and everything I have wth lactose in it gives me a unsettled night. At first my mummy and daddy started cutting out foods in my diet which they thought may be making me windy and have tummy ache with no joy. Then my Mummy was searching the internet for clues to what was the matter with me and she came accross information on lactose Intolerance.
Mummy and Daddy changed my milk from baby milk & cows milk to Lactofree milk and cut other things out as I had a very high intake of dairy foods. So I couldn’t eat my yogurts, or my cream cheese. My milky buttons went in the bin and most of my baby meals weren’t aloud :( I dont think my mummy really realised how much stuff had lactose in, and I think she thought it was really just down to dairy stuff. But she is still learning everyday.
However, I was still in pain mainly at night. I still had unsettled nights and Mummy and Daddy couldnt understand why as they was being really careful – or so they thought – they were making all my meals up in bulk from scratch and freezing them. Then, my mummy checked the crips I ate (as she didn’t do before as she thought there would be no way it was in crisps) and yes there was lactose in my Skips, my Monster Munch and my Poms Bears :( so they have also now been taken out of the cupboard. But luckily my quavers are ok.
So we are learing all the time, finding new things to cook all the time. It has turned all our lives upsidedown, and we now have to be so organised as people dont really cater for lactose intolerance. So Mummy takes milk and snacks everywhere with us and if we are going out she makes me something to take with us. I really hope that someone soon makes me some lovely Fromage frais which is lactose free, or some yogurts which are not soya (yuk dont like soya yogurts), and some cream cheese would be nice :) I ‘spose now I will just grow and live with this and when i get older i hope to be able to deal with it a little better. Caitlyn
