Andrea McLean Speaks Out

Andrea McLean is best known for her role on Loose Women, the ITV show filled with daily debate on a range of issues affecting women. And the issue Andrea is speaking candidly about is what it’s like to be lactose intolerant.

Through an interview with the Daily Mail, Andrea offers an open and honest insight into her experience of lactose intolerance – from family life, crippling headaches and learning to say no to certain foods, right down to the embarrassing trips to the loo.

Andrea was diagnosed with lactose intolerance after a bout of severe dysentery, which she contracted in India, left her with a damaged small intestine. This depleted her natural lactase levels – the enzyme needed to digest lactose. What followed was a steep learning curve about what she could and couldn’t eat. An allergy to soya and a dislike for goat’s and rice milk eventually led Andrea to Lactofree.

“Recently I discovered I am also allergic to soya – so I had to find a new milk alternative. I have tried goat’s milk and rice milk, which I am fine with but don’t like. Luckily there is now Lactofree, a cow’s milk with added enzymes so the lactose is already broken down.”

Today, on the 100th International Women’s Day, we would like to say thank you to Andrea for bravely sharing her experiences and playing a huge part in helping to raise awareness of lactose intolerance.
