Hampshire Potato Day

Hampshire Potato Day

It may only officially be potato day in Hampshire this weekend, but we thought that gave us the ideal opportunity to celebrate the lovely spud!

Sunday is Hampshire Potato Day! Attracting more than 2,000 visitors, it’s all about the potato with 150 varieties going on sale alongside cookery demonstrations, children’s activities and lots of potato advice!

But if you can’t make it to the event, don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of ideas, tips and facts to help you celebrate the humble spud at home.

There are nine different varieties of potatoes grown in the UK and each one is ideal for certain types of cooking. ‘Charlotte’ is a salad potato, but can also be used for roasting and boiling, while if you are making potato wedges, then ‘Nadine’ is the one to look out for!

When you’re baking potatoes, try standing them in a muffin tin. This will save you from having to grab a hot potato out of the oven! If your family prefers mash, did you know that some experts advise using baked potatoes as a base instead of boiled? Either way, don’t forget to add some Lactofree whole or semi-skimmed to make your mash creamy and lactose free!

This weekend, why not try and make something a little different with your potatoes? Grab some ‘Charlotte’ or red potatoes and try your hand at our Potato Salad or spice things up with our lactose free Chili Wedges recipe.
