Collop Monday

Collop Monday

Also known as Shrove Monday, today is the day for bacon and eggs…

If you aren’t entirely familiar with Collop Monday, we thought we’d shed some light on this traditional day.

‘Collop’ actually comes from the Norse word meaning a ‘slice of meat’ and is appropriate because today is traditionally when you would use up any leftover meat in preparation for Lent.

Collop Monday is also known by a few other names, including ‘Hall Monday’, ‘Merry Monday’ and ‘Rose Monday’. In Cornwall, it is known as ‘Peasen Monday’ and instead of meat, those who celebrate serve pea soup.
