We’re sharing more questions and answers from our Experts Question Time event that took place in November.

During our first live web chat with paediatrician, Dr Adam Fox and dietitian Sian Porter, we dispelled many myths about lactose intolerance.

Does lactose intolerance get worse with age?
Dr Fox confirmed that as we age our natural levels of the lactase enzyme in our bodies tends to decrease, meaning that our tolerance levels will also decrease. In short, lactose intolerance can worsen with age.

Can lactose intolerance cause any other allergies/disorders?
According to Dr Fox, lactose intolerance doesn’t predispose you to anything else at all.

Is it possible for lactose intolerance to vary in severity?Lactose intolerance varies between people and also over time. It tends to get worse as you get older and your lactase levels drop.” says Dr Fox.

What can cause fluctuations in lactose intolerance severity?
The exact amount of lactose in the same product will vary so you may well find you can tolerate some things better at some times that others.

Can you cure lactose intolerance?
Dr Fox says: “Unfortunately there is no cure for lactose intolerance.”
