Ask Sian Porter
We’re sharing questions and answers from our first Experts Question Time event that took place in November.
During our first live web chat, paediatrician Dr Adam Fox and dietitian Sian Porter answered many of your questions about lactose intolerance.
A lot of you were concerned about how following a lactose free diet could affect your health – luckily Sian was able to help!
One web chat participant expressed an interest in knowing which was better to prevent osteoporosis – soya products or Lactofree.
As Sian says: “For healthy bones you need an adequate intake of certain nutrients particularly calcium and vitamin D. Lactofree has all the same nutrients as normal milk just without the lactose. With soya, you would need to check that the products are fortified with calcium. You also find vitamin D in dairy products, oily fish, fortified breakfast cereals and eggs. The body can also make it via the action of sunlight on the skin. And don’t forget, weight bearing exercise is also important for bone health.”
Emma, a mum, was also concerned about bone health and asked Sian how she can ensure that her son gets all the vitamins and calcium that he needs.
Sian advised that Emma makes sure that she uses substitutes like Lactofree that has all the benefits of real dairy. It also good to remember that there are other good sources of calcium like fish with soft bones, calcium fortified fruit juice, fortified breakfast cereals, nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, brazils), seeds, pulses, dried figs, and dried apricots.
