My cow Eloise and me

Dear Eloise, our beautiful Jersey cow, gave us the most wonderful creamy milk from which we made our own yogurt and cheese. Every day the gorgeous stuff would be on the table until one day I collapsed in agony with bleeding in my stomach.

After much investigation I discovered that it was the dairy products that were irritating my poor body. Eloise was beside herself with misery, all of that lovely milk and nobody appreciating it. But we resolved her plight and made her feel loved again by finding her some orphan calves to raise. She lived happily raising babies with her milk until she died of old age.

Meanwhile, back on the farm, I was bereft. No more hot chocolate, no more cheese on toast, no more creamy yogurt. Many, many years passed and when other family members ate their toasties I’d beg a sniff just to keep the memory alive.

Then one day, a black and white cow caught my eye in a picture advertising Lactofree milk and cheese. It couldn’t be true I thought, cheese I can eat, am I dreaming? I wasn’t! Lashings of soft white cheese and raspberry jam on crusty toast, yummy toasted cheese sandwiches, cauliflower cheese with brown tangy bits. My heart soared at the renewed tingle in my taste buds.

Some may think that the black and white cow is just a coincidence, but I know that she’s sent from my lovely Eloise grazing happily in the place where good cows go to rest. Eloise’s message to me to show her love.
