Now I can have my cake and eat it!

I became lactose intolerant the week of my 18th birthday, during a week long holiday hiking in the Lake District with friends and we could not work out why I was suddenly so ill.
It took about another month to realise that I was sick after drinking milk/tea or eating cheese, however at that time I was still able to eat food that contained milk by-products, eg. whey powder. I started university 2 months later and avoided eating the obvious things, but after a while I kept getting unwell again. I struggled on for several months and then one day a friend told me he had seen a brand of milk in the shop called Lactofree – I gave it a go but did not expect anything to have changed, as I thought I was allergic to cow’s milk and not lactose. But it was amazing, I drank the milk and I was fine – no vomiting, no rash, no upset stomach.
After that, I went through every food item and got rid of anything from my diet that contained milk (unless it was a Lactofree product) and I have not been sick once since doing this.
I am soon to turn 19 and am so happy to have found Lactofree – I am greatly looking forward to making my birthday cake with the knowledge I will not be sick after eating it!

The same thing happened to me! The first time i was really ill was the night of my 18th birthday, and i couldn't work it out. It took a few weeks for me to realise, but i worked out that i was at my worst in the morning after breakfast, but i was fine on days that i didn't have cereal :) It's now over a year later, and its so reassuring to read about someone who went through the same sort of thing, so thank you

I am interested in any lactose free products as I have recently been diagnosed 'lactose intolerant'. Reference travelling out of the country - I enquired at the airport about taking lactose free products and they advised me that if I had a letter from my doctor stating I needed to carry these items I would probably be able to carry them onto the plane in hand luggage. However always worth checking with the airline you're travelling with.
