Growing Pains

When I was a young child, my doctor refused to believe that anyone could be intolerant to milk. My parents and I worked hard to pack ‘safe’ lunches, inform friends and get calcium replacements into my diet. Then when I was 13, my doctor told me I should put dairy back into my diet, which still didn’t agree with me and it wasn’t until three years later that I linked my symptoms to lactose intolerance.
I had to eliminate all foods containing lactose out of my diet. Which meant no dairy products and none of my favourite snacks and treats. No more tasty omelettes, cheese scones or breakfast cereal in order to avoid my immune struggles, ulcers and bloating. Ever since then I have always looked at cheese with a mix of fear and longing – wanting the very thing that makes me so ill.
When Lactofree Milk first appeared in shops I just trudged on passed it, to sullenly stock up instead on calcium enriched Rice Milk. In my head I just thought “It’ll still have too much lactose in for me, I wish I was normal.” I traipsed past it month after month feeling cheated and too resigned to bother reading the label, despite the friendly looking cow on the packaging, enticing me to dairy heaven!
At 18, I went to University in Hull and one day on a trip to the supermarket, I spotted Lactofree Yogurt and was so desperate for dairy I picked up the carton and read the packaging….Imagine my surprise! Lactofree is tested to trace levels! Lactofree are aware of the symptoms of Lactose intolerance! They are hosting online a whole COMMUNITY! I could barely believe it. My local supermarket only stocked the Yogurt but I soon visited another and found Soft White Cheese and then a third which stocked the Semi-Hard Cheese.
I’ve started hunting around Hull for Lactofree and I’m going to start lobbying larger suppliers to get their act together! I hope all of you will join me in lobbying for increased access to Lactofree. They won’t know where we are unless we tell them, so let’s get to it!
It’s been several months now since I found Lactofree and I’ve experienced no ulcers, no bloating and a happy immune system! I’m so thankful that I no longer have to suffer dairy-free alternatives! Even though I love cooking everything from scratch I now also have the choice to be a normal student and live on cheese on toast!
Thank you Lactofree!
