My son Ben screamed constantly as a baby.

My son Ben screamed constantly as a baby.

He could only be comforted by lying tummy to tummy on me or my husband, which meant absolutely no sleep for us. He continuously vomited, especially after breastfeeding and he had the most awful slimy nappies!

I raised these issues a couple of times with the health professionals only to be told that “babies cry”, “babies are sick” and “nappies are not pleasant”. I was felt like I was being viewed as a new mum who didn’t have a clue.

So, I did some research myself and decided to begin to try Ben on some solids at 9 weeks old. After his first amount of banana, he stopped crying, slept soundly and was altogether a different child.

I took this evidence to the health professionals who reluctantly admitted it may be lactose intolerance, but refused to help further. After subsequent appointments they agreed to prescribe lactose free formula, but wouldn’t do any formal tests. Thankfully, through my employer’s private health care, I arranged testing that confirmed what we already knew to be true.

Not only was I made to feel stupid but my baby’s nutritional health was put at risk, by the refusal to acknowledge his intolerance. I found health visitors and doctors very naive about what is an incredibly common intolerance and I haven’t received any nutritional guidance from the NHS.

Ben is now aware of what he can and cannot have (and so are all the children in his class at school!) but I believe he doesn’t miss out because of great products like Lactofree.

Lactofree products, such as the cheese, now make it easier to give Ben a varied and balanced diet and prevent him from being excluded from family or nursery meals.

I can’t thank Lactofree enough for providing such great products!
